* DARS TIP OF THE WEEK * WHEN IN DOUBT, ASK QUESTIONS *

Ask Questions. It's THAT simple.

To many students the DARS can seem like it's written in a FOREIGN language!
There are a minimum of three sets of academic requirements (University,
College & Major), and within each requirement, there may be numerous
sub-requirements. This can be tricky, confusing stuff... especially when
policy states YOU are responsible for knowing and following "current
requirements and procedures at the departmental, college and university
levels."

That's why asking questions is so critical to your success in interpreting
your DARS. When you are unsure of what your DARS is reporting - be it the
foreign language requirement, Tier II, what adding a minor might do,
"double-dipping," or if you have a question about an individual class –
talking to the appropriate people is essential to getting your question
answered.

So, when in doubt – ask your advisor, contact the A&S Office of
Undergraduate Student Affairs in Wilson Hall, or seek out the answers via
online resources, e.g., <HTTP://www.cas.ohiou.edu/>. The odds are that your
question is NOT unique and the answer is only a phone call, an email, an
appointment, or a mouse click, away.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

* TRANSFER TIP OF THE WEEK *

TRANSFER ADJUSTMENT: NEW SYSTEMS, PLACES & FACES

Students transferring to a new university face many challenges and
differences. Learning your new school's policies, navigating new systems
and meeting new people sometimes seems overwhelming. These new
psychological, academic and environmental challenges may lead to what is
known as "Transfer Shock" and can result in transfer students experiencing
a drop in their GPA's. Research supports the fact that transfer students'
grades are often lower than students who entered as freshmen.

Making a successful transition to a new campus involves different sets of
skills. Among these is the ability to make the psychological adjustment to
the new environment. Becoming connected to your new campus is vital to your
success. There are many ways to become connected, such as joining a group
or club or volunteering, but finding someone who can help answer your
questions is essential. It doesn't matter who it is--your adviser, RA,
your roommate, or just someone who helps you feel more comfortable in your
new school setting--as long it is someone who cares about you and how you
are doing.

The College of Arts and Sciences undergraduate student affairs staff will
be more than happy to meet with you to help answer your questions. If you
have questions specifically related to transfer issues, please contact
Randy Price, Transfer Adviser at pricer1@ohio.edu. He's here to help.

Can atheistic science alone explain the world as we observe it? Must

arguments. On November 4th, Dr. Berlinski, author of such books as
"A Tour of the Calculus" and "The Advent of the Algorithm", will deliver a
lecture at Ohio University. Come hear him deliver a biting defense of
religious thought against the New Atheists, who share a belief that

* WINTER INTERCESSION REGISTRATION  *

Don't overlook the opportunity to slip in an extra class or two by taking
courses offered during the intercession, NOVEMBER 30-DECEMBER 31.

If it's not feasible to stay in Athens to attend classes, check out all the
web-based courses listed at the regional campuses-- you can do one of
these at home. Or, if you are within driving distance of any of the OU
campuses, you can attend a class there. Remember, courses completed at
regional campuses provide Ohio University credits and count in your DARS
the same way as Athens campus course credits do.

A word of warning about Winter Intercession: First, be VERY careful to note
the time frame allowed for canceling or dropping a class. In general it is
much shorter than regular quarters and it's easy to lose track of how
quickly the cancel/drop dates come and go. Even more importantly, these
deadlines are "flexible" and may be tailored to a particular course
format--e.g., a workshop or field experience. Therefore, to avoid having
to pay for a class you weren't able to attend or complete, you must cancel
or drop within the specific allotted time frame described in the details for
THAT particular intercession course.

Second,  the majority of intercession offerings happen not to be Arts &
Sciences courses. This may not be important to you, but if you're attempting
to complete A&S requirements, rather than University requirements, be cautious.
Check your DARS and ask in the Student Affairs office, Wilson Hall, if you
aren't sure.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

* DEVELOPMENT COURSES OFFERED ONLINE TO OU STUDENTS *

Hundreds of not-for-credit online professional development courses
are available to OU students through the Office of Lifelong and
Distance Learning (located in Haning Hall), in partnership with "ed2go."

Although these development courses do NOT count toward or fulfill any
of your graduation requirements, you can enroll in reasonably priced
graduate test preparation courses and other popular hands-on courses
such as Microsoft and Adobe software applications, Web page design,
Web and computer programming, certification prep, basic accounting,
and business skills and grant writing--skills courses that can be
used immediately.

Each course runs six weeks. Instructors are knowledgeable in their
area of expertise because they work in the field they teach. Well-
crafted lessons and interaction with others in the course, combined
with flexibility, enables students to study at their own pace in a
24-7 online classroom.

New sessions start on the second or third Wednesday of each month.
Upcoming sessions: NOVEMBER 11, DECEMBER 9 and JANUARY 20.
A full course catalog is available at <http://www.ed2go.com/ohio>.

OU students receive a 20 percent discount off the $99.00 fee, meaning
these courses are just $79.00! In most courses the $79.00 includes
materials. The cost may even be tax deductible using the Lifetime
Learning tax credit (always check with a tax preparer for details).
PLEASE NOTE: the cost is not part of your comprehensive tuition fee
for regular fall/winter/spring registration.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

LIVING GREEN/HEALTHY LIVING: <http://www.ohio.edu/sustainability>

* TIP OF THE WEEK * CHECK THE TEMPERATURE IN YOUR FRIDGE & FREEZER *

It's easy for those dials to get knocked out of whack by oversized tubs of
leftovers or marauding houseguests, so make sure you have the
temperature set optimally in your appliances.

You should consult with your manufacturer, but in general the EPA
recommends keeping refrigerators at 37 degrees F and freezers at 3 degrees.
Anything colder is probably overkill and a waste of energy.

That's important, because refrigerators and freezers use about a sixth of
home electricity.

Not sure if the internal temps are actually correct? Place a weather
thermometer inside to check the temperature and adjust the dials until you
get the desired results.
